The community housing model promoted by our cooperative, “Cooperativa Alborán Ciudad Sénior” aims to create a space in which we can live independently despite our age. A place where we can enjoy the later stages of life with the person centered comprehensive care model.

We have secured an area of 100,000 m² in the municipality of Cantoría (Almería), one kilometer from the town, subject to the next approval of the General Plan by the City Council and the Junta de Andalucía. With the full support of the council.

Independence

Our members want to live in their own house, enjoying their independence and privacy, with the possibility of being involved in the community. In our housing complex we will be able to benefit from domestic and recreational care services. Enjoying a friendly and safe environment.

Accessibility

Accessibility is paramount, both for the housing units and for our social centre, with no architectural barriers.
If the time comes when we are no longer able to live in our own home, our community can also offer an assisted living residential centre.

Reduced cost

Our community will enjoy a reduced monthly cost, being developed as a cooperative, both in the construction of the complex, and in the cost of use. The scale of the project enables us to reduce these costs. It also allows us to offer a range of services that would not be possible in other smaller community housing projects.

Community costs of approximately €300/month

The cost of becoming a member, giving rights to the use of one of the housing units or assisted living centre, as well as the facilities on the complex, is estimated to be from €89,000 plus VAT. The monthly cost for members enjoying the basic services and maintenance of the complex as a whole is expected to be from less than €300 per month per household.

The reason for Cantoria Activa

The WHO defines the term active aging as “the process of optimizing opportunities for health, participation and safety in order to improve the quality of life as people age”. (WHO, 2002:79) In this way, aging is considered as a positive experience, a longer life accompanied by continuous opportunities for health, participation, and security. This definition not only considers aging in terms of health care, but also incorporates all the factors of the social, economic, and cultural issues that affect us as we grow older.

We are aware that we are going to face a new stage of life, and we know that our later years will bring certain problems with them. We have to do something so that events do not overtake us. We want to secure peace of mind, insure that our future is clear in a place with an active lifestyle and all the necessary care. In a safe and accessible environment, where we can truly enjoy quality of life as we grow older.

Life philosophy

A philosophy of life in which we have considered all possible outcomes, with several alternatives that give us peace of mind in the face of any eventuality.
We do not want to depend on our relatives, and we do not want to be a burden to anyone. Our children have to make their own life without having to worry about our wellbeing too.

Accessibility

We know that as we grow older, our physical abilities decrease, but many of us don’t want to end up in a residential home.
The reality is that we may face limitations is simple everyday activities that we currently take for granted, such as cleaning the house, cooking or even self-care.

What can we do?

We should prepare responsibly for our old age. We do not want to be a burden on our family in later years. If, on the other hand, we continue to live in our own home, and we want to be cared for, we would need to hire daily carers. This would be an expensive option .

If we opt for a private retirement home, it would be limited by our financial situation, or we may be assigned a state-run home, which may not suite everybody.
